Hundreds Attend Abortion-Rights Rally In Dallas

CBS Dallas / Fort Worth

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — A rally organized to condemn a restrictive abortion measure has drawn more than 200 people to downtown Dallas.

Planned Parenthood took its Stand With Texas Women campaign to City Hall Plaza Wednesday, drawing a crowd of orange-clad protesters carrying signs like, “Don’t Mess with Texas Women.”

More than 1,100 supporters attended a similar rally the day before in downtown Houston. Another stop is scheduled for Wednesday evening in Fort Worth, the hometown of Sen. Wendy Davis. She earlier led a Democratic filibuster that put the bill in the national spotlight.

Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, was among the speakers Wednesday in Dallas.

The group said that policies put in place by Governor Rick Perry and the state legislature have already forced the closure of more than 55 women’s health centers, and if SB1 passes dozens more health centers will shut their doors.
